Evolution of the GMC Logo

GMC logo

The storied history of GMC is reflected in its bold, uncompromising logo. While all modern GMC vehicles, available at Patriot Buick GMC, all feature the most modern design, the GMC logo went through a number of designs before the modern, distinctive style.

Early Logos

Although the company officially began in 1902 as the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, the first GMC logo didn’t appear until it was debuted as part of GM at the 1912 New York Auto Show. These early trucks featured a complex two-ring design that matched the style of the time. The logo didn’t receive its first redesign until 1947, which completely changed the look of the logo and set the stage for the classic designs to follow.

Modern Logos

In 1960, the logo was redesigned again. With a long, sleek look, the silver text on a black background brought the design closer to its modern form. The 1975 logo added the iconic GMC logo font, placing it in white on a red background for a bold statement.

The 1979 logo may be the one associated most with the company, with the red letters losing a background and gaining an embossed design. That logo was only slightly altered for the current design, introduced in 2014, which streamlines the design even more.
