ROUTINE SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: OIL CHANGES
Some car issues are downright mysterious. Others, like low oil or tire pressure levels, aren’t so clandestine.
If you’ve noticed any of these issues with your car, it’s time to schedule an oil change in Boyertown. To help you recognize when it’s time to change the oil in your car, we’ve compiled some common warning signs to look out for.
Oil Light is On
Let’s start with the most obvious sign. If the oil light illuminates on your dashboard, your car is telling you that it needs new oil. Whether your oil is dirty or in low supply, it’s important to pay attention to this light and bring in your car for routine maintenance.
Unusual Sounds Coming from Your Engine
While weird sounds can mean a lot of different things, if you’re hearing a grinding noise or something that sounds like knocking, there’s a good chance your engine parts are rubbing up against one another. Clean and fresh oil keeps these parts nicely lubricated, preventing these noises from happening.
Low Gas Mileage
When oil gets old, it starts to thicken. When thick oil flows through your engine, it now has to work harder to keep parts lubricated. In addition to diminishing performance, this can also cause your fuel economy to suffer, causing you to stop at the gas station more often.
Dark-Colored Oil
New oil is light brown in color and semi-translucent in texture. Over time, it will become dark and dirty. Checking your oil on a regular basis is a good idea, as it will allow you to see any changes in color or texture.
Smoke Coming Out of Your Exhaust
Only a little exhaust should come of your car’s exhaust pipe. Unless it’s very cold, you really shouldn’t even be able to see it.
If you’re seeing smoke every time you turn on your car, something is probably wrong with your oil.
