The History and Meaning of the Iconic Buick Logo

Buick Logo

Founded in 1903, Buick Motor Company is one of the most influential and legendary automotive manufacturers in the United States today. A lot goes into creating a successful brand, and for Buick, it all started with the creation of the bold and recognizable Buick logo. Humble Beginnings

It all started in 1904 with the creation of the first-ever Buick logo. This logo was much different than the tri-shield pattern that we know today — instead, it was a monochromatic illustration of a man walking around the globe.

This logo was quickly replaced in 1905 with a circular emblem that included the Buick brand name and the words “The Car of Quality” wrapping around the top half. This logo lasted all the way until 1911, when Buick introduced another new design, which nixed the slogan and used the “Buick” brand name in a more graphic way.

The Buick logo continued to evolve and change until the year 1959, when we saw the first introduction of the iconic three-shield logo that we still know and love today. Each of these three shields had its own color to represent each Buick model available on the market at the time.

Tri-Shield Evolution

Buick briefly departed from the tri-shield logo in 1975, when the logo changed to a hawk symbol that was intended to represent speed and power. This rebrand coincided with the introduction of the new Buick Skyhawk model. The hawk logo remained prevalent until 1980, when Buick returned to an updated three-shield logo that simplified and reimaged the original design.

Buick has continued to experiment with different versions of the tri-shield design, including a chrome variation in 2002 and the popular 2015 variant which features the original three colors and silver details.

In 2022, the logo was updated once again and will be present on all models starting in 2023. This tri-shield logo featured three shields aligned horizontally instead of diagonally, making it the first true redesign since 1990.
